Inhibitory effect of Brazilian propolis AF-08 on tumor promotion

Propolis is a resinous material collected by honeybees from parts of plants, buts, and exudates and has been used as a folk medicine since ca.
300 BC.
The ethanol extracts from eleven Brazilian propolis inhibited TPA-induced ear edema in mice.
Brazilian propolis AF-08 exhibited the remarkable inhibitory effect on two-stage carcinogenesis test using DMBA and TPA in mouse skin.
The percentage of tumor-bearing mice treated with DMBA plus TPA was lOO% at week 17, whereas the percentage in the groups treated with DMBA plus TPA and AF-08 was 13%.
The group treated with DMBA plus TPA produced 15.7 tumors per mouse at week 17, whereas the groups treated with DMBA plus TPA and AF-08 had 0.6 tumors per mouse.
The treatment with AF-08 caused 96% reductions, in the average number of tumors per mouse at week 17.
From active fraction of AF-08, two triterpenoids were isolated.
The 50% inhibitory dose of moronic acid for TPA-induced innammation was 158 ug/ear.
These results indicate that Brazilian propolis AF-08 is valuable candidate for furher studies in cancer chemopreventive agents from natural resources.
